The Story of the Crows
I was walking my dogs in the rain one day evening, listening to music on my *wired* headphones (an important detail as revealed below), when this amazing, dark, weird, and funny story just sort of started playing in my head.
The story was about a guy who tries to train the neighborhood crows to bring him money, but everything goes terribly sideways, and he ends up [redacted].
I recorded it into my voice memo, almost an hour, cracking myself up as i walked home in the rain with my dogs.
At the time I was working on a edits for my second novel, Rainbow in the Dark, so I set the crow story aside.
Months later i opened my voice memos, ready to transcribe THE MOST AMAZING HORROR COMEDY EVER...
But when I hit play, this is what I heard:
SKKCHHHHHHHH SKCCCCHHHHH SKRCCCCHHHHH
The microphone had been rubbing against the collar of my raincoat. Everything was static. The entire story was lost!
In some weird way, I suspected it was the work of the crows.
They had given me the story, and then they had taken it away, in order to demonstrate their power.
They wanted me to know.
Later, I made friends with some crows. They are smart, persistent, and cunning.
And I kept thinking about that lost story...
So now I have reconstructed it to the best of my ability and memory, in an attempt to communicate that first perfect vision.
What I’ve made is merely a shadow of the original.
It can never be as good.
But I had to do it. I had to warn everyone about the crows.
