THerE iS No DAna Only ZuUl

So loud in the shower or mouthing the words in the back of a bus.
The song comes on the radio and you can’t help yourself.
Your sister tells you you’re never on key.
The bassist confirms this, but don’t let it stop you.
In the hall of your mind the notes are all right.
And when you sing, the song sings you.
What a lovely singing voice you must have.
There is no Dana, only Zuul.

The things you love will surprise you.
Pushing her hands along the silk of her dress.
Growling and writhing, she floats to the ceiling,
Porcelain skin hiding a ghoul.
I want you to close your eyes and relax.
But possession’s a tango, it takes at least two.
You are turning into what you already are and
There is no Dana, only Zuul.

People have hurt you, and you have hurt people.
The containment unit contains multitudes.
Dogs and cats living together.
This shit is for real, and not only for you.
Try to imagine all life as you know it.
It’s more of a policy than a rule.
There is no day, there is no night.
There is no Dana, only Zuul.

Read Tobin’s spirit guide, look for signs.
Divide by zero and infinity too.
When you shout, you become the echo.
When you stand at a lookout, you become the view.
When someone asks you if you’re a god, you say YES!
It’s good to be smart but not too cool.
There is no shame in loving this plan.
There is no Dana, only Zuul.

(This is one of the first poems I wrote during my poem-storm a few years back. It’s about the original Hollywood blockbuster movie Ghostbusters and also the divine unity of existence.

The story is once I was driving back to Trinidad, Colorado through the San Luis Valley out by Westcliffe and I was a little baked and listening to some music, and then suddenly, it’s hard to describe, but the world just kind of opened up, and everything got real wide and still, and I was just in it. The words that came to me to describe the experience were, “Everything is holy and all of it one.”

I think the line from Ghostbusters, “There is no Dana, only Zuul” is another way of expressing that sentiment, with of course some darker connotations, but if you just substitute God or Unity for Zuul, you get where I’m coming from. And let’s not forget that old Zuuly, that nut, is part of the unity as well. Oh, and the part about not singing on key is autobiographical.)
